Say It Louder: Disability Rights ARE Human Rights. Let’s Make It Real.

“Say it louder for the people in the back: Disability rights ARE human rights.”

I find myself saying this, or thinking it almost every single day. Because even in 2025, it still feels like the world needs a reminder. And sometimes, so do we.

For those of us living with disabilities, this isn’t just a catchy phrase or a hashtag, it’s our reality. It’s our fight. It’s our daily truth.

When I was first diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, I’ll be honest, I didn’t even fully realize what “disability rights” meant. At the time, I thought it was just about having a ramp or a handicapped parking spot. But over time, I learned it’s about so much more.

It’s about being able to show up to work, and actually stay there, because workplaces are accessible and inclusive.

It’s about having access to healthcare that actually sees and supports you.

It’s about having a say in decisions that affect your life.

It’s about not having to fight just to be seen as a whole, capable, valuable human being.

That’s why I started Girls Chronically Rock. I wanted to create something that reminded me, and others, that we’re not invisible. That our stories, our bodies, our lives matter. That we belong not just in the room, but at the head of the table.

I still run into barriers all the time, physical ones, like steps with no ramp. Attitudinal ones, like assumptions that I can’t design clothes or run a business because of my disability. Systemic ones, like policies that don’t consider how we actually live our lives.

But here’s the thing: none of this should still be happening. Disability rights are not some “special request, they’re basic human rights.

We deserve access.

We deserve representation.

We deserve to live with dignity, pride, and joy, without having to constantly prove ourselves.

So say it louder with me:

Disability rights ARE human rights.

And it’s not enough to just say it, we have to make it real. We have to keep breaking barriers, together.

Every time you choose to advocate, to listen, to hire inclusively, to call out injustice, you’re helping to make it real.

Every ramp, every captioned video, every adaptive clothing line, every vote for equity, it all matters.

For me, that’s what #BreakBarriers is all about. It’s about action. Not just awareness, but accountability. Not just words, but work.

So today, and every day, I challenge you to look around. What barriers can you help break? What doors can you help open?

Because at the end of the day, disability rights are not optional. They are not negotiable. They are human rights, and they belong to all of us.

Let’s make it real.
