Am More Than Somebody Else’s Inspirational Story
Disability is a major part of my life.
I’m not going to pretend it isn’t.
Living with Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy has shaped who I am, what I advocate for, the businesses I’ve created, and the way I look at accessibility.
But there is so much more to me.
I am Keisha.
I am a Black woman.
I am an entrepreneur.
I am the founder of Girls Chronically Rock and GCR Adaptive Solutions.
I love fashion.
I love creating.
I love advocating for my community.
I have big ideas, probably TOO many big ideas. 😂
I can be ambitious and exhausted.
Confident and frustrated.
Grateful and pissed off.
Disabled and happy.
Disabled and having a bad day.
All of those things can exist at the same damn time.
So Yes, Sometimes I’m Tired of Being Inspirational
You can absolutely be inspired by me.
I’m not offended by that.
But please understand that I wasn’t put on this earth to teach nondisabled people how to appreciate their lives.
I don’t exist so somebody can look at me and think:
Wow, if she can do it, I have no excuse.
Nah.
That’s not my assignment.
I’m trying to live my life just like everybody else.
I want accessibility.
I want independence.
I want opportunities.
I want reliable care.
I want successful businesses.
I want accessible housing.
I want to travel.
I want to have fun.
I want to look cute while doing all of it. 😂
And sometimes?
I want to complain without somebody telling me how inspirational I am.
Because disabled people don’t always have to be brave.
We don’t always have to be positive.
We don’t always have to teach.
We don’t always have to advocate.
We don’t always have to inspire.
Sometimes we’re allowed to just be tired.
Sometimes we’re allowed to be pissed off.
Sometimes we’re allowed to laugh at how ridiculous this shit can be.
And most importantly…
We’re allowed to just be human.
