Why I’m Forever Grateful to Mass General Hospital
Living with a disability often means navigating a world that isn’t always designed with accessibility in mind. But there are places, like Mass General Hospital (MGH), that truly understand the importance of accommodating and supporting individuals with disabilities, and for that, I am forever grateful.
As someone living with muscular dystrophy, I rely on specialized care and thoughtful accommodations to ensure that my medical needs are met safely and effectively. At MGH, I’ve experienced this kind of care firsthand, and it has made all the difference in my health and well-being.
When I needed an echocardiogram, MGH went above and beyond to make the process seamless. They were able to use a Hoyer lift so I could comfortably lie on the bed for the procedure, a small but significant adjustment that meant so much to me.
They also made it possible for me to complete my sleep study at home, understanding that accessibility and comfort are essential for people with disabilities. This level of accommodation gave me the confidence to manage my health without unnecessary stress.
Additionally, thanks to their partnership, I was able to get a swallow study done, something I’m incredibly glad I pursued. It was during this study that they noticed a decline in my swallowing ability due to my muscular dystrophy. Their attentiveness and expertise allowed me to address the issue early and take the necessary steps to adapt.
These experiences may seem routine to some, but for someone with a disability, they are monumental. The care, empathy, and accommodations MGH provides go such a long way. They recognize the unique challenges faced by people like me, and they meet those challenges with thoughtfulness and action.
For all of this—and so much more, MGH will forever be #1 in my eyes. The staff, the partnerships, and the dedication to inclusive care have had a profound impact on my life, and I will always be thankful.
If you’re someone living with a disability or know someone who is, I encourage you to seek out care providers like MGH who understand the importance of accessibility and patient-centered care. It truly makes all the difference.
With gratitude,
